What Are Irregular Verbs?
The verbs that break the –ED rule
Irregular verbs do NOT follow the regular –ED rule in the Simple Past. Instead, they change form completely — and each one is different. You must learn them by heart.
The good news: the past form is the same for all subjects (I, you, he, she, we, they). No extra changes needed!

No pattern — each verb is unique!
In negative sentences and questions, irregular verbs always go back to the base form — never the past form. Example: "She went to the park." → "She didn't go." / "Did she go?"

⚠ Important: Use the BASE form after didn't — NOT the past form.

Last Sunday, Juana and her family went to Poás Volcano National Park in Alajuela. They woke up at five in the morning because the park opened early and they didn't want to miss the best views. Her father drove the car along the mountain road while Juana sat in the back and read a small guide about the volcano.
When they arrived, the air felt cold and fresh — very different from San José. They bought their tickets at the entrance and got a map from the ranger. Her little brother Mateo ran ahead on the trail and came back laughing, with mud on his boots.
After twenty minutes of walking, they saw the crater for the first time. The turquoise lake inside the volcano made everyone stop and stare. Juana thought it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Her father took dozens of photos, and her mother wrote a message to the grandparents back in Liberia.
On the way back, they heard birds singing in the cloud forest and found a small café near the exit. They sat near a wooden table, ate tamales, and drank hot chocolate. Mateo didn't eat his tamale — he didn't like the filling — but he had two cups of chocolate and felt very happy about that.
Before they left, Juana spoke to one of the park guides. She asked him about the last eruption, and he told her it happened in 2017. "Did it scare the animals?" she asked. "Did people have to leave?" He smiled and said that yes, the park closed for a while, but nature always recovers.
They drove home tired but happy. That night, Juana wrote in her journal: "Today I saw something I will never forget."
