What Is the Past Continuous?
Actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past
The Past Continuous (also called the Past Progressive) describes an action that was in progress — happening, ongoing — at a specific time in the past. It is not finished quickly; it was a process that was happening when something else occurred.
📌 Formula: Subject + WAS / WERE + verb-ing
Compare: "I ate dinner." (Past Simple — it was completed) vs. "I was eating dinner." (Past Continuous — in progress at a moment)

WHEN → the next action is a POINT (short / instant): she rang, he fell, it stopped.
WHILE → the next action is a LINE (long / ongoing): she was sleeping, we were working.
You CAN use WHILE with an interrupted action too: "While I was sleeping, my phone rang." — here WHILE introduces the LONG action.
Stative Verbs — Cannot Use -ing
Some verbs describe states, not actions — they cannot be continuous
Stative verbs describe states, feelings, or mental conditions — not physical actions. They do not describe things happening actively. Because of this, they are NOT used in any continuous (progressive) form.
You cannot say: "I am knowing the answer" → ✅ "I know the answer."

"Have" is stative when it means possess: "She has a car." ❌ "She is having a car."
BUT "have" IS used in continuous when it is part of an activity: "She is having breakfast." / "We are having a meeting."
Similarly: "I was thinking about you." (= mind was occupied = OK as continuous) vs. "I think it is a good idea." (opinion = stative)

Last summer, Diego and his family traveled to Tortuguero National Park in Limón, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It was their first time visiting, and they arrived in the late afternoon. The sky was turning orange and pink, and the jungle was humming with life around them.
After dinner, they decided to take a night walk near the beach. A guide was leading the group slowly along a dark trail. The children were walking quietly behind him, looking at the dark trees. Suddenly, Diego stopped — he was watching a tiny light move through the bushes when he realized it was a firefly. Then another. Then dozens.
"Look!" he whispered to his sister, Ana. She was not paying attention — she was staring at something on the ground. But when she looked up, she gasped. Hundreds of fireflies were dancing in the darkness all around them.
While the fireflies were blinking their lights, the guide was explaining quietly how fireflies use light to communicate. The children were listening while they were watching the magical display in the trees.
Then something extraordinary happened. While Diego was taking a photo, a sea turtle appeared at the edge of the beach. The guide signaled everyone to be very quiet. They all were holding their breath when the enormous turtle slowly began to lay her eggs in the sand.
Nobody was speaking. Nobody was moving. The whole group was watching in silence while the turtle was completing her ancient ritual. Diego felt that this was the most incredible night of his life. When the turtle finally returned to the sea, everyone exhaled slowly. None of them was thinking about anything else in that moment — only the beauty of nature in Tortuguero.
